Vermont's 251 Club
We suspect Arthur Peach had a case of cabin fever back in 1954. He needed to get out of the house, so he decided to take a look around Vermont. Not just his part of Vermont. All of Vermont. All 251 of our towns. Not only did he set out to see them all himself, he issued a challenge in Vermont Life Magazine. And the 251 Club was born.
Today the 251 Club has over 4,100 members, with a couple of meetings every year and a newsletter. The rules are about what you'd expect of a good Vermont Club. There aren't any. And, of course, scoring is on the honor system. You just have to visit all of the 251 cities, towns, gores and grants. Our three gores, Averys Gore, Buels Gore and Warrens Gore and our only grant, Warners Grant are unincorporated areas without a local government.
So, when you go and what you do when you get there are up to you. Some explorers count just driving through as a visit. Some insist on getting a photo of themselves in each town. Others insist on talking to a native for it to count as a real visit. That could make it tough if all 10 of Warrens Gore's residents are out of town. And impossible in Averys Gore and Warrens Grant, since no one lives in either.
But, it's a great way to see the beauty of Vermont.
